TriClaw

The TriClaw is the second in my series of various creatures that I have sketched. I conceptualized this one as a monster that uses his three hands and three feet to hold stilts that he walks with. These stilts could be interchangeble - here they are perhaps teeth, or even bone that grows from his hands. As is state below, the majority of materials used here are actually a combination of 3ds Max maps that do not rely on bitmaps. Instead much is done with displacement, bump, and falloff through included speckle and stucco maps to achieve the desired slimy result.

This model was made in zBrush 2, 3ds Max 8, and a tiny bit (the eye texture) in Photoshop CS2. It took about 3 hours to make, and clocks in at just over 5000 faces.

Development
The original sketches. zBrush's zSpheres prove once again to be a vital part in organic modeling workflow. After a subdivision, here we have the final model and its parts. Note that the membrane lids and eye are all independantly moveable.

A closer shot of the final render from the front. Note too that all texturing except that of the eye was done using a variety of maps from solely within 3ds max (i.e. bump, specular, falloff, speckle.) And a shot from the top. Specular mapping was used to ensure that the pupil did not reflect as much light as the rest of the eye. And a shot from the bottom.
